T-shirts

5 pieces — Tier A. WFH base layers and social evenings. 100% organic cotton only — no elastane in body fabric for skin-contact t-shirts. GOTS + OEKO-TEX required.

Prices as of 2026-06 — brand product pages — ← Back to overview

Fiber and certification note: T-shirts sit against skin for 8+ hours. The skin-contact rule is strictest here: 100% organic cotton, no elastane in body fabric. A t-shirt with 95% cotton / 5% elastane body knit (common in fitted styles) is flagged. Both brands selected below use 100% organic cotton jersey. GOTS certification covers supply chain and processing chemistry, including dye restrictions. OEKO-TEX Standard 100 covers finished-product residue testing.

Comparison note: Pact holds the strongest cert stack (GOTS + Fair Trade + OEKO-TEX simultaneously) at the lowest price. MATE adds domestic manufacture and low-impact dyes. Rawganique (Tier D) is the only fully undyed / no-synthetic-dye option but carries no finished-garment cert — the tradeoff is honest.

Pact Softspun Standard Fit Crew Neck T-shirt

Softspun Standard Fit Crew T-shirt (5-pack)

Pact • USA brand, India manufacture (GOTS-certified factory)

100% organic cotton jersey (softspun). No elastane in body fabric.

GOTS • Fair Trade Certified • OEKO-TEX Standard 100

~$150 / 5-pack (~$30/ea) as of 2026-06

Buy: 1 five-pack (use 5 or gift surplus); or buy 3 individual at ~$30 each

Tier A

Best-certified organic cotton t-shirt at the value tier. GOTS + Fair Trade + OEKO-TEX is the strongest stack available. Softspun is a combed and ring-spun cotton that is noticeably softer than standard jersey. Size S available. 5-pack is efficient purchasing.

Maintenance:
  • Wash: Machine wash cold, gentle cycle. Avoid fabric softener. Use mild detergent. Turn inside out to preserve color.
  • Dry: Tumble dry low, or line dry. Remove promptly.
  • Iron: Low heat if needed; 100% cotton jersey wrinkles minimally for casual wear.
  • Expected life: 3–5 years with cold wash / low dry regimen. Softspun cotton is combed and ring-spun — the fiber quality extends garment life vs. standard open-end cotton.
  • When to replace: Pilling through the body; neckline stretching; fabric thins to translucency at shoulder or collar area.

Pact does not publish a standalone care guide page (as of 2026-06, their care-guide URL returned no content).

MATE the Label Organic Cotton Crew Neck Tee

Organic Cotton Crew Neck Tee

MATE the Label • Los Angeles, CA (cut, sewn, and dyed in LA)

100% organic cotton jersey. Low-impact dyes. No elastane in body fabric.

GOTS • B Corp • Climate Neutral Certified

~$48 / ea as of 2026-06

Buy: 2 pieces (True White + one neutral)

Tier A

GOTS-certified and cut/sewn/dyed in Los Angeles — the most complete domestic supply chain for a certified organic cotton t-shirt. Low-impact dyes (no restricted azo dyes under GOTS). Italian-influenced minimalist silhouette appropriate for social evenings. Premium over Pact justified by domestic manufacture and style.

Maintenance:
  • Wash: Machine wash cold, gentle cycle. Turn inside out to preserve low-impact dye color. Mild detergent; avoid fabric softener.
  • Dry: Tumble dry low or line dry. Do not over-dry.
  • Iron: Low heat if needed. Low-impact dyes are generally color-stable but high-heat ironing can affect the True White shade over time.
  • Expected life: 4–6 years; LA-made with premium ring-spun construction; domestic cut-and-sew quality generally exceeds offshore equivalent at this price.
  • When to replace: Neckline distortion; body pilling; dye fading beyond acceptable tone shift.

Tier A t-shirt total: 5 pieces = $186

3 × $30 (Pact individual or from 5-pack) + 2 × $48 (MATE) = $186. Alternatively, buy the Pact 5-pack ($150) + 2 MATE ($96) = $246 with extras. The table in the overview uses $90 + $96 = $186 for the 5-count.

Tier D — Long-term replacement (heirloom)

Rawganique’s SONOMA is grown and made entirely in the USA: the cotton is US-grown organic cotton, and the garment is sewn in the US. There are no synthetic dyes — the natural color is the undyed cotton color. No finished-garment cert, but the supply chain is as short and traceable as any in this category. Buy 1 piece to evaluate; replace one MATE or Pact piece as it wears out.

Rawganique SONOMA 100% Organic Cotton Crewneck T-Shirt

SONOMA 100% Organic Cotton Crewneck T-Shirt

Rawganique • Denman Island, BC, Canada (since ~1997); grown & made in USA

100% organic cotton. Undyed (natural cotton color) or bio-dyed. No polyester thread, no elastane, no synthetic dyes. Organic cotton thread.

No third-party certification on finished product (self-claim only). Grown and made in USA. Per untreated-natural-brands dossier: certifying the small workshop is cost-prohibitive per brand. No GOTS scope cert; no OEKO-TEX on finished garment confirmed.

$25.95 / ea as of 2026-06

Buy: 1 piece (heirloom trial; replace individual Tier A pieces as they wear out)

Tier D

The no-synthetic-dye / no-elastane design philosophy that defines Rawganique since 1997. This t-shirt is the structural simplest possible garment: cotton fiber, cotton thread, cotton knit, natural color. USA grown and made is a supply chain credential that exceeds what most “organic” t-shirts can claim. The tradeoff: no third-party cert, limited color range (undyed = ecru/natural tone, which is actually ideal for this Italian minimalist palette).

Maintenance:
  • Wash: Gentle cycle, cold or warm water, mild biodegradable detergent, mesh laundry bag recommended. No bleach, no fabric softeners. Oxygen whiteners acceptable for natural color items.
  • Dry: Hang or lay flat to dry. Tumble dry on low/gentle if needed; remove promptly to avoid heat degradation of undyed cotton.
  • Iron: Steam iron at cotton setting if desired.
  • Expected life: 5–8 years. No elastane means no synthetic-component degradation. Cotton ages gently with proper cold-wash care.
  • When to replace: Body fabric thins to translucency; neckline pilling or distortion; color shift in natural dye (if bio-dyed version selected).

Color recommendation

Muted tones aligned with Italian minimalist palette: white, off-white/ecru, light grey, navy, slate. Avoid bright colors and graphic prints. Pact offers these in their standard range. MATE the Label’s “True White” and earth tones work well.

Considered and rejected

Uniqlo Supima Cotton Crew Neck T-shirt ($14.90): Supima (long-staple Pima cotton) is excellent quality. No GOTS certification; some OEKO-TEX on certain lines. At $14.90 it is hard to argue against on value, but the lack of supply chain certification is the gap. For someone prioritizing budget over certification, this is a reasonable compromise — buy 3 Uniqlo + 2 MATE = $140 total with better quality on the MATE pair.

Allbirds Trino Crew Neck: 45% Tencel / 36% merino / 19% nylon. Semi-synthetic blend. Excluded by fiber purity rule for skin-contact base layers.

Bamboo-viscose t-shirts (Boody, Cariuma): Excluded. Chemically regenerated rayon. Not a natural fiber.
