Mattress Toppers

Sits between the mattress and the fitted sheet. Indirect skin contact but a significant off-gassing concern — it is a large surface area in a closed bedroom at body temperature for 8 hours per night. No memory foam, no polyester fiberfill, no chemical flame retardants.

Why the topper matters for off-gassing: A mattress topper is not in direct skin contact — it sits under your fitted sheet. But at sleeping body temperature (33–37°C at the sleep surface), a large foam or synthetic surface in a closed bedroom will off-gas VOCs into the sleeping microclimate. Conventional polyurethane memory foam toppers carry PFAS treatments, isocyanate-derived VOCs, and sometimes added flame retardants that do not off-gas cleanly. At body temperature, off-gassing rates are higher than at room temperature. Greenguard Gold certification is the relevant standard: it tests VOC emissions at sleeping conditions (35°C). For natural alternatives: wool and latex do not carry these concerns with proper certification (GOTS wool, GOLS latex, Greenguard Gold on finished product).

Sleep and Beyond Organic Wool Bedding

Sleep & Beyond — myWool Mattress Topper

USA · sleepandbeyond.com

Organic wool fill (batting) · organic cotton shell · thickness not stated by brand (typical range: 1–2 inches compressed)

OEKO-TEX Standard 100 • GOTS (organic wool) • No flame-retardant chemical treatments (wool is naturally FR at LOI ~25%)

$199 2026-06

Tier A

Sleep & Beyond specializes in natural wool bedding and has OEKO-TEX Standard 100 on their topper line with GOTS-certified organic wool. The wool fill's natural flame resistance is the key advantage over any topper that requires added brominated or phosphorus-based flame retardants. At $199 for a queen, this is the most affordable entry into a certified-organic wool sleep surface. Not MADE SAFE or Greenguard Gold certified (Naturepedic and Avocado advantage on those certs); adequate for Tier A as an intermediate step before a full latex mattress investment.

Maintenance:
  • Wash: Do not machine wash the quilted topper — the wool fill can shift and clump. Spot clean as needed. Air outdoors in fresh air and sunlight 2–4 times per year.
  • Dry: Air dry only. No dryer. The cotton-shell protects the wool interior but the quilted baffle construction is not designed for machine washing.
  • Storage: Roll or fold loosely in breathable bag. No plastic compression.
  • Expected life: 10–15 years with proper airing and no washing stress on the wool fill. The cotton shell may wear faster than the fill; inspect seams annually.

Tier B — Defer

GOLS-certified latex toppers: Greenguard Gold off-gassing certification, MADE SAFE on the finished product. Latex provides firmer, more consistent support than wool batting; useful if the mattress is too soft. The Avocado and Naturepedic 2" latex toppers are functionally equivalent with the same cert stack.

Avocado Organic Latex Topper

Avocado — Organic Latex Topper (2")

India (latex) / USA (assembly) · avocadogreenmattress.com

GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latex · 2" thickness · ILD (firmness) options available · organic cotton cover

GOLS (latex) • GOTS (cotton cover) • MADE SAFE • Greenguard Gold

$299–$349 2026-06

Tier B

GOLS + GOTS + MADE SAFE + Greenguard Gold is the same cert stack as the Avocado pillow, applied to a topper. Dunlop latex (the denser, more supportive latex process vs. Talalay) at 2" is a meaningful sleep-surface upgrade. The ILD options let you choose firm or medium depending on your mattress and sleeping position. If the current mattress is adequate but slightly too firm, medium ILD brings significant comfort benefit. For a pre-conception profile where off-gassing at sleeping temperature is a priority concern, Greenguard Gold certification (tested at 35°C) is the specific and correct certification for this product.

Maintenance:
  • Wash: Do not machine wash latex. Spot clean the cotton cover; remove it and wash warm if needed. Latex core: air outdoors in shade.
  • Dry: Air dry only for latex. Cotton cover can be tumble-dried low.
  • Storage: Store flat at room temperature. Do not roll or compress latex — can crack at fold lines.
  • Expected life: 5–10 years. Natural latex does degrade over time (oxidation); GOLS-certified latex typically has longer service life than synthetic latex.

Naturepedic Organic Latex Topper

Naturepedic — Organic Latex Topper (2")

USA · naturepedic.com

GOLS-certified organic latex · 2" thickness · GOTS-certified organic cotton encasing · firm ILD

GOLS (latex) • GOTS (encasing) • MADE SAFE • Greenguard Gold

~$329 2026-06

Tier B

Identical cert stack to Avocado at $30 more for comparable size. Naturepedic's specific advantage is brand focus: they make exclusively non-toxic sleep products for families, and they are the brand most often recommended by pediatric environmental health practitioners. If you are building toward a Naturepedic mattress (see mattresses page), the topper is a logical preparatory investment in the meantime. Functionally equivalent to Avocado; choose based on brand preference or current mattress compatibility.

Maintenance:
  • Wash: Spot clean latex. Remove GOTS cotton encasing and wash warm.
  • Dry: Air dry latex. Tumble dry low for cotton encasing.
  • Storage: Store flat. Avoid folding latex layers.
  • Expected life: 7–10 years for GOLS-certified organic latex topper.

Tier C — Ideal

Holy Lamb Organics quilted wool topper: the premium domestic wool option with GOTS certification. Heavier wool fill than the Sleep & Beyond Tier A; more substantial feel and longer expected lifespan. US-made small-batch production.

Holy Lamb Organics All-Natural Quilted Topper

Holy Lamb Organics — Quilted Wool Topper

Quilcene, WA, USA · holylamborganics.com

GOTS-certified organic wool fill (heavier than entry tier) · organic cotton sateen shell · quilted baffle construction to prevent fill shift

GOTS (finished product, wool + shell)

~$350–$425 2026-06

Tier C

The quilted construction prevents the wool fill from shifting during use, which is the primary maintenance failure mode for flat wool toppers. GOTS on the finished product from a small-batch domestic producer. Not MADE SAFE or Greenguard Gold (Avocado and Naturepedic latex toppers have a narrower off-gassing cert advantage there), but wool does not off-gas — the Greenguard Gold cert is most meaningful for materials that can off-gas (latex, foam). For a pure wool topper, GOTS is the correct primary certification. At $375 vs. $199 for the Sleep & Beyond Tier A, the upgrade is fill quality and domestic production, not cert superiority.

Maintenance:
  • Wash: Spot clean only due to quilted construction. Quarterly or semi-annual airing outdoors in sunlight.
  • Dry: Air dry only. No machine washing.
  • Storage: Breathable bag. Cedar moth deterrent. Annual sunlight airing.
  • Expected life: 15–25 years. Holy Lamb notes expected lifespan on product pages.
